Stocks, Securities, Wire Transfers

Stocks and Securities

Gifts of appreciated securities, stocks and bonds can provide considerable tax advantages when transferred to the YMCA of the East Bay before they are sold—creating an income tax deduction and avoiding the capital gains tax that would have been due upon their sale if held more than a year. Please consult with your tax advisor for taxable benefits.

To donate securities from your brokerage account to the YMCA of the East Bay:

  1. Please complete the Stock and Securities Transfer Request Form and send it to your broker or financial advisor. This form includes all the YMCA’s broker information you need to send to your broker.
  2. Please also send a copy of the completed form to Manny Nungaray, Chief Development Officer at mnungaray@ymcaeastbay.org. This will ensure the YMCA of the East Bay properly credits your gift as you intended.

How the securities transfer process works:

  • Your broker initiates your securities transfer via the Depository Trust Company (DTC) system, and the shares are delivered electronically to the YMCA of the East Bay brokerage account.
  • Vanguard notifies YMCA of the East Bay that your gift of securities has been received.
  • Your gift of securities is considered complete when the date the stock is received in the YMCA of the East Bay brokerage account

In order for the YMCA of the East Bay to properly credit the gift, it is important that you or your broker notify us of the gift and its intended purpose, and that the broker reference your name in the DTC transfer instructions by including donor’s name, address, name of security, number of shares, and designation/purpose.

Wire Transfers

To make a gift by wire transfer, follow these steps:

  1. Complete the Wire Transfer Request Form and send it to your banker or financial advisor.
  2. Please also send a copy of the completed form to Manny Nungaray, Chief Development Officer at mnungaray@ymcaeastbay.org. The bank will then transfer the funds from your account to the YMCA of the East Bay.

By sending us a copy of the form, you alert us of your gift and ensure that it will be used as you intended.

Give Through Your IRA

If you are 70½ or older, you can make a charitable gift directly from your Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to the YMCA. This type of gift, known as a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD), is a smart way to support your community while reducing your taxable income.

A QCD counts toward your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) but is not subject to federal income tax, making it one of the most tax-efficient ways to give.

How It Works:

  1. Contact your IRA administrator to request a Qualified Charitable Distribution to the YMCA of the East Bay.
  2. Provide the following information:
    • Legal Name: YMCA of the East Bay
    • Address: Attn: Development Office, 2111 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, Berkeley, CA  94704
    • Tax ID (EIN): 94-1156635
  3. Ask your IRA administrator to include your name and contact information with the check so we can properly acknowledge your gift.
